Gift-giving is a traditional that has been with mankind ever since time human history began. Kings would give gifts to other kings whenever alliances were made or when appeasement needed to be made. People gave gifts to each other in celebration of certain holidays and times of the year and people also gave gifts during the birth of children or ascension of rulers. Today, the reasons are the same. Only that today people use gift designer wrapping paper to cover the gift and enhance the element of surprise. So what are the occasions that gifts are given?

Birthdays
Gifts are exchanged when someone is celebrating their birthday. There are different types of gifts that would suffice for this occasion. It can also be noted that the younger someone is, the more expectant they are of a gift. Children can be very disturbed if no gift is given to them during their birthday. On the same token, the older one gets, the less attached someone is to gifts to the extent that adults will be content with just a simply happy birthday card or greeting. Friends and family members who come to visit with the new parents are usually known to carry a lot of gifts and presents

Holiday seasons
Gift stores and other gift accessory makers report a tremendous demand on their products when there is a holiday season in the offing. The most common and well-known holiday is the Christmas season which is in celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. In many countries, this holiday is observed and while there has been a deliberate attempt to shift its religious symbolism and replace it with a more commercial one, the season nonetheless reflects a time when gifts are exchanged in large numbers. Even people that do not openly acknowledge a belief in Christianity nevertheless enjoy the holiday season with its music,, lights and being off from work.

Turn of a year
Another time when gifts are exchanged is when there is a turn of a calendar. The most common of this is when there is a New Year and this is mostly on December 31 or what is called New Year’s Eve. This is the time when the clocks and calendar switches from one year to the next. Another turn can be the end of a decade and the beginning of another. Recently we crossed over from 1999 to the year 2000.

Sentimental gifts
Many times, people don’t exchange gifts because there is a season or an event or a holiday. People give gifts to those they love to commemorate their relationship. During anniversaries, husbands and wives exchange gifts. People who are dating also exchange gifts and also friends who are close.

What makes gifts memorable is the element of surprise. Wrapping paper is usually used to bring this out. It greatly enhances the gift impact when you receive a gift that is attractively wrapped.
